2 Plain to our view is the sun’s passage as it shines out, a very masterpiece of his workmanship, who is the most High. 3 How it burns up the earth at noon-day! How fierce its glow, beyond all endurance! Tend thou the furnace, heat is thy daily portion; 4 yet three times hotter the sun, as it burns up the hill-side, scorching all with its fiery breath, blinding men’s eyes with its glare. 5 Swiftly it speeds on its course, to do the bidding of the Lord, its glorious maker. 6 The moon, too, that keeps tryst so faithfully, ever marking how the seasons change, 7 and giving the signal when feast days come round! The moon, whose light must decrease till it vanishes, 8 and then increase to the full circle, the month its name-child; 9 cresset of a watch-fire that lights up the high vault of heaven with its radiant glow. 10 And the stars that deck the sky with their splendour, a beacon-light the Lord kindles high above us; 11 the summons of his holy word answering so loyally, watching so patiently at their post! 1

Altitudinis firmamentum pulchritudo ejus est,
species cæli in visione gloriæ.
2
Sol in aspectu annuntians in exitu,
vas admirabile, opus Excelsi.
3
In meridiano exurit terram,
et in conspectu ardoris ejus quis poterit sustinere?
fornacem custodiens in operibus ardoris:
4
tripliciter sol exurens montes,
radios igneos exsufflans,
et refulgens radiis suis obcæcat oculos.
5
Magnus Dominus qui fecit illum,
et in sermonibus ejus festinavit iter.
6

Et luna in omnibus in tempore suo,
ostensio temporis, et signum ævi.
7
A luna signum diei festi:
luminare quod minuitur in consummatione.
8
Mensis secundum nomen ejus est,
crescens mirabiliter in consummatione.
9
Vas castrorum in excelsis,
in firmamento cæli resplendens gloriose.
10
Species cæli gloria stellarum:
mundum illuminans in excelsis Dominus.
11
In verbis Sancti stabunt ad judicium,
et non deficient in vigiliis suis.
12 ἰδὲ τόξον καὶ εὐλόγησον τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτὸ σφόδρα ὡραῖον ἐν τῷ αὐγάσματι αὐτοῦ 13 ἐγύρωσεν οὐρανὸν ἐν κυκλώσει δόξης χεῖρες ὑψίστου ἐτάνυσαν αὐτό 14 προστάγματι αὐτοῦ κατέσπευσεν χιόνα καὶ ταχύνει ἀστραπὰς κρίματος αὐτοῦ 15 διὰ τοῦτο ἠνεῴχθησαν θησαυροί καὶ ἐξέπτησαν νεφέλαι ὡς πετεινά 16 ἐν μεγαλείῳ αὐτοῦ ἴσχυσεν νεφέλας καὶ διεθρύβησαν λίθοι χαλάζης 17 καὶ ἐν ὀπτασίᾳ αὐτοῦ σαλευθήσεται ὄρη ἐν θελήματι αὐτοῦ πνεύσεται νότος 18 φωνὴ βροντῆς αὐτοῦ ὠνείδισεν γῆν καὶ καταιγὶς βορέου καὶ συστροφὴ πνεύματος 19 ὡς πετεινὰ καθιπτάμενα πάσσει χιόνα καὶ ὡς ἀκρὶς καταλύουσα ἡ κατάβασις αὐτῆς 20 κάλλος λευκότητος αὐτῆς ἐκθαυμάσει ὀφθαλμός καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ ὑετοῦ αὐτῆς ἐκστήσεται καρδία 21 καὶ πάχνην ὡς ἅλα ἐπὶ γῆς χέει καὶ παγεῖσα γίνεται σκολόπων ἄκρα 12 Look up at the rainbow, and bless the maker of it; how fair are those bright colours 13 that span heaven with a ring of splendour, traced by an almighty hand. 14 Swift comes the snow at his word, swift flashes the fire that executes his vengeance; 15 he has but to unlock his store-house, and the clouds hover, bird-fashion, 16 arsenals of his might, whence the pounded hail-stones fall. 17 How his glance makes the hills tremble! Blows the south wind at his bidding, 18 earth echoes with the crash of his thunder; blows the north wind, and there is whirling storm. 19 Soft as roosting bird falls the snow, spread all around; not more silently comes locust-swarm to earth; 20 what eye but is captivated by its pale beauty, what heart but is filled with terror at the dark cloud that brings it? 21 He it is pours out the frost, that lies white as salt on the earth, the frozen earth that seems covered with thistle-down. 12

valde speciosus est in splendore suo.
13
Gyravit cælum in circuitu gloriæ suæ:
manus Excelsi aperuerunt illum.
14
Imperio suo acceleravit nivem,
et accelerat coruscationes emittere judicii sui.
15
Propterea aperti sunt thesauri,
et evolaverunt nebulæ sicut aves.
16
In magnitudine sua posuit nubes,
et confracti sunt lapides grandinis.
17
In conspectu ejus commovebuntur montes,
et in voluntate ejus aspirabit notus.
18
Vox tonitrui ejus verberavit terram,
tempestas aquilonis, et congregatio spiritus:
19
20
Pulchritudinem candoris ejus admirabitur oculus,
et super imbrem ejus expavescet cor.
21
Gelu sicut salem effundet super terram:
et dum gelaverit, fiet tamquam cacumina tribuli.
22 ψυχρὸς ἄνεμος βορέης πνεύσει καὶ παγήσεται κρύσταλλος ἐ{F'} ὕδατος ἐπὶ πᾶσαν συναγωγὴν ὕδατος καταλύσει καὶ ὡς θώρακα ἐνδύσεται τὸ ὕδωρ 23 καταφάγεται ὄρη καὶ ἔρημον ἐκκαύσει καὶ ἀποσβέσει χλόην ὡς πῦρ 24 ἴασις πάντων κατὰ σπουδὴν ὁμίχλη δρόσος ἀπαντῶσα ἀπὸ καύσωνος ἱλαρώσει 25 λογισμῷ αὐτοῦ ἐκόπασεν ἄβυσσον καὶ ἐφύτευσεν ἐν αὐτῇ νήσους 26 οἱ πλέοντες τὴν θάλασσαν διηγοῦνται τὸν κίνδυνον αὐτῆς καὶ ἀκοαῖς ὠτίων ἡμῶν θαυμάζομεν 27 καὶ ἐκεῖ τὰ παράδοξα καὶ θαυμάσια ἔργα ποικιλία παντὸς ζῴου κτίσις κητῶν 28 δ{I'} αὐτὸν εὐοδοῖ ἄγγελος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν λόγῳ αὐτοῦ σύγκειται τὰ πάντα 22 Cold blows the north wind, and ice forms on the water; no pool but it rests there, arming the water as with a breast-plate; 23 frost gnaws at the mountain-side, parches the open plains, strips them, as fire might have stripped them, of their green. 24 Remedy for all these is none, but the speedy coming of the mist; frost shall be overmastered by the showers the sirocco drives before it,[1] 25 and at the Lord’s word the chill blast dies away.

What else but divine wisdom tamed the rising of the seas,[2] and planted the islands there? 26 Hear we what perils in the deep mariners have to tell of, and wonder at the tale; 27 of the great marvels it contains, living things a many, both fierce and harmless, and monstrous creatures besides. 28 Who but the Lord brought the venture to a happy issue? His word gives all things their pattern.
22
Frigidus ventus aquilo flavit,
et gelavit crystallus ab aqua:
super omnem congregationem aquarum requiescet,
et sicut lorica induet se aquis:
23
et devorabit montes, et exuret desertum,
et extinguet viride, sicut igne.
24
Medicina omnium in festinatione nebulæ:
et ros obvians ab ardore venienti humilem efficiet eum.
25
In sermone ejus siluit ventus,
et cogitatione sua placavit abyssum:
et plantavit in illa Dominus insulas.
26
Qui navigant mare enarrent pericula ejus,
et audientes auribus nostris admirabimur.
27
Illic præclara opera et mirabilia,
varia bestiarum genera, et omnium pecorum, et creatura belluarum.
28
Propter ipsum confirmatus est itineris finis,
et in sermone ejus composita sunt omnia.
29 πολλὰ ἐροῦμεν καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀφικώμεθα καὶ συντέλεια λόγων τὸ πᾶν ἐστιν αὐτός 30 δοξάζοντες ποῦ ἰσχύσομεν αὐτὸς γὰρ ὁ μέγας παρὰ πάντα τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ 31 φοβερὸς κύριος καὶ σφόδρα μέγας καὶ θαυμαστὴ ἡ δυναστεία αὐτοῦ 32 δοξάζοντες κύριον ὑψώσατε κα{Q'} ὅσον ἂν δύνησθε ὑπερέξει γὰρ καὶ ἔτι 33 34 καὶ ὑψοῦντες αὐτὸν πληθύνατε ἐν ἰσχύι μὴ κοπιᾶτε οὐ γὰρ μὴ ἀφίκησθε 35 τίς ἑόρακεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐκδιηγήσεται καὶ τίς μεγαλυνεῖ αὐτὸν καθώς ἐστιν 36 πολλὰ ἀπόκρυφά ἐστιν μείζονα τούτων ὀλίγα γὰρ ἑωράκαμεν τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ 37 πάντα γὰρ ἐποίησεν ὁ κύριος καὶ τοῖς εὐσεβέσιν ἔδωκεν σοφίαν 29 Say we as much as we will, of what needs to be said our words come short; be this the sum of all our saying, He is in all things.[3] 30 To what end is all our boasting?[4] He, the Almighty, is high above all that he has made; 31 he, the Lord, is terrible, and great beyond compare, and his power is wonderful. 32 Glorify him as best you may, glory is still lacking, such is the marvel of his greatness; 33 praise him and extol him as you will, he is beyond all praising; 34 summon all your strength, the better to exalt his name, untiring still, and you shall not reach your goal. 35 Who can tell us what he is from sight seen of him? Who can magnify his eternal being? 36 Much more lies beyond our ken; only the fringe of creation meets our view; 37 and of all things the Lord is maker. Yet, live thou in the worship of him, wisdom thou shalt have for thy reward. 29

Multa dicemus, et deficiemus in verbis:
consummatio autem sermonum ipse est in omnibus.
30
Gloriantes ad quid valebimus?
ipse enim omnipotens super omnia opera sua.
31
Terribilis Dominus, et magnus vehementer,
et mirabilis potentia ipsius.
32
Glorificantes Dominum quantumcumque potueritis,
supervalebit enim adhuc: et admirabilis magnificentia ejus.
33
Benedicentes Dominum, exaltate illum quantum potestis:
major enim est omni laude.
34
Exaltantes eum, replemini virtute, ne laboretis,
non enim comprehendetis.
35
36
Multa abscondita sunt majora his:
pauca enim vidimus operum ejus.
37
Omnia autem Dominus fecit,
et pie agentibus dedit sapientiam.
